At first glance we may not see it, but this piece speaks of an interwoven, unchangeable bond. While physically the tree and the bench may appear different, deep within, they share the same DNA…the bench having been created from the life of a tree. Individually, they offer something specific…he his branches for protection and shade, she a place to rest and reflect. Together, they welcome the weary and the wandering with their united offer of peace and comfort for the journey.

Recently, the Lord kept laying on my heart the poetic phrase “bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh.” Along with His words, He began giving me a picture of one of the benches that sits under the many beautiful Live Oaks along the Fort Macon trail. Slowly the connection became clear and I knew I just HAD to paint this…for He showed me a picture of the interwoven connectedness of marriage, in both the current earthly realm and our future heavenly marriage with Him, that is to come. This painting is inspired by Genesis 2:23-24, where we hear Adam poetically exclaim after God creates Eve from his side, “This is at last bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman because she was taken out of Man.” In the original Hebrew the connection is even made more clear as Ishshah (Woman) is derived from Ish (Man). In this connectedness, a covenant relationship is formed…one which only death can separate. But there’s EVEN MORE! In the very next verse, we see the creation of the first earthly marriage AND a foreshadowing of the eternal heavenly marriage to come, “Therefore, a man (Jesus) shall leave His father and mother (leaves Heaven) and hold fast (to show His covenant faithfulness) to His wife ( to His Bride,The Church, Us) and they shall become one flesh (as believers, we will be united to Christ eternally).” Our earthly marriage covenant relationships are a picture of the Good News of the perfect and permanent union to come…one that is woven together in a way that cannot be lost or undone…ever.

If you feel alone today, I pray this painting helps you to know that like this tree and the bench standing beside him, we are all part of one another and part of Him-individually, uniquely, but also corporately. We are His people and He is our God. Together, may we welcome in the weary and wandering, with the united offer of peace and comfort for their journey.
