Trees of Life Collection
“Oaks of Righteousness”
18”x24” fluid acrylic on canvas, framed
This piece is based on Isaiah 61:3 “(God) will bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of JOY instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called OAKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, a planting of The LORD for the display of His glory.” This painting is for anyone who is heavy hearted…may it remind you that there will come a day when The Lord will restore you. So, like the mighty oak tree, stand strong in the storm you are facing and trust these promises of God are yours.
“Bent But Not Broken”
30”x30” fluid acrylic on gallery wrap canvas
I felt like this tree had a story to tell. Looking at her, heavy and leaning from some past storms she’d endured, I couldn’t help but think of how many of us might feel like this little tree, our own lives weary and bent. Yet, I saw something more as I studied her. There she stood bended and bowed down, but with the glow of color and life still shining in that bright summer sun. In that moment I heard the story she was telling…it was a tale not only of hardship, but also one of endurance that had brought forth character. And so I thanked The Lord for this tree, because her story provided a living picture of His promise and encouragement from Romans 5:3-5 saying with JOY: “Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”
Maybe you have been, or even currently are in one of life’s storms, feeling yourself being almost blown over by the difficulties that are coming at you. If so, I pray that this painting will remind you that you may be bent, but that you can put your hope in Him….for He will sustain you in the worst of storms and when the Son returns shining brightly…your colors will come forth even more bright & beautiful than before.
“Interwoven”
30”x30”
At first glance we may not see it, but this piece speaks of an interwoven, unchangeable bond. While physically the tree and the bench may appear different, deep within, they share the same DNA…the bench having been created from the life of a tree. Individually, they offer something specific…he his branches for protection and shade, she a place to rest and reflect. Interwoven together, they welcome the weary and the wandering with their united offer of peace and comfort for the journey.
Recently, the Lord kept laying on my heart the poetic phrase from Genesis 2:23, “bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh.” Along with His words, He began giving me a picture of one of the benches that sits under the many beautiful Live Oaks along the Fort Macon trail here along the sound and sea. Slowly the connection became clear and I knew I just HAD to paint this…for He was showing me a picture of the interwoven connectedness of marriage, in both the current earthly realm and our future heavenly marriage with Him. In Genesis 2:23-24, after God creates Eve from Adam's side, we hear Adam JOYFULLY exclaim, “This is at last bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman because she was taken out of Man.” In the original Hebrew the connection is even made more clear as Ishshah (Woman) is derived from Ish (Man). In this connectedness, a covenant relationship is formed…one which only death can separate. But there’s EVEN MORE! In the very next verse, we see the creation of the first earthly marriage INTERWOVEN with a foreshadowing of the eternal heavenly marriage to come, “Therefore, a man (Jesus) shall leave His father and mother (leaves Heaven) and hold fast (to show His covenant faithfulness) to His wife ( to His Bride; The Church; Us) and they shall become one flesh (as believers, we will be united to Christ eternally).” Our earthly marriage covenant relationships are a picture of the Good News of the perfect and permanent union to come…one that is INTERWOVEN in a way that cannot be lost or undone…ever.
“Heavenly Applause”
24”x24”
This painting is inspired by Isaiah 55:12 that proclaims: “For you shall go out in JOY and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and ALL THE TREES OF THE FIELD SHALL CLAP THEIR HANDS.”
Did you know that other than God and humans, trees are the most mentioned living thing in the Bible? I have always loved how trees speak so profoundly in their silence…roots deeply embedded in the warmth of the earth, holding strong through life’s storms. They dance with JOY swaying happily with the spirit of the wind as it blows through their branches and they sing to their Creator with arms of worship reaching heavenward.Again and again, they remind us to rejoice in the One Who designed us both
Going Coastal
“Poiema”
36”x36”
This piece is titled “Poiēma” (ποίημα), the Greek word meaning masterpiece or craftsmanship and from which we get the English word “poem.” Paul used this word in his letter to the Ephesian church to describe God’s perspective on us as His personal craftsmanship: “For we are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
No matter how you might feel about yourself or what other people may say about you, the deepest truth about you is that you are God’s poem, written on His heart. Like these handcrafted vessels, you have been intricately, masterfully created by the Artist and uniquely equipped for His good purpose—to be fishers of people, capturing them with the BEST Story of All Time.
“Coastal Communion”
20”x20”
Walking these shores, watching Him paint the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets…every day I get to commune with Him here is truly a grace gift.
“Brighter Days Are Coming”
24“x30”
This lighthouse stands tall on the shores of Cape Lookout, beckoning all who find themselves tossed by the waves of strong storms…warning them of danger and lighting the way to safety on the soft sand of his shores. Beneath him, lies a small, battered and broken down little building. She looks like a toddler who doesn’t dare let go of her father’s hand, knowing that security is found in his nearness. Above them the Heaven’s sing of the color of joy that can often be seen most vividly just after a storm has passed.
This piece was inspired by John 1:5, a verse that has brought me comfort many times in the storms of my life. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Maybe you are in your own storm now. If so, I encourage you to look for the Light of the Father’s love beckoning your heart to the safe, secure shores of His Heart. Maybe you feel like that little building today, beaten and battered by the winds of life. Cling to the One Who is watching over you, but know that He is actually holding you. Brighter days are coming.
“Who’s Drivin’?”
18”x18”
This is one of two companion pieces (see the second piece below) that remind me of all the ways God keeps showing me that He’s God & I’m not…that He’s the One driving and I can relax and trust that He’s got this!
“Where We Goin’?”
. 20”x20”
This is the sister piece to the one above. I painted them both around the same time. So many times I want to walk by SIGHT and not by faith…I want to know where God is taking me, what’s ahead, what do I need to prepare for. To be honest, I want to control the future. But God keeps reminding me that He has already gone before me and He will give me all the grace I need for what’s ahead. Maybe you need that reminder as often as I do.
“The Spirit of the Wind”
24”x24”
In this simple painting from a recent trip to Oriental, with my husband of many decades now, The Lord reminded me of something so much deeper.
Many moons ago, as newlyweds, we had a little sailboat that we’d often go adventuring on in the nearby Pamlico River. It always amazed me how the wind, that we couldn’t see with our eyes, had such power, could determine our direction and bring us such joy! Without the wind, there was no sailing. Instead, we could only move slowly across the water with our little motor. It wasn’t nearly as much fun without the wind.
In Hebrew, their word for “wind” is “ruakh” which also means breath & spirit. 1 word that holds a vital 3 strand meaning within in it. It is this word in Genesis 2:7 that tells us how God originally breathed His life into Adam. His breath creating life. Again we see this word with all 3 meanings in Ezekiel 37, where God summons the “four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” (Ezekiel 37:9b). God once again creating with His Ruakh. Like the wind that breathes life into the sails of this little boat, it is His breath today that empowers our lives, directs our steps and fills our hearts with the joy of life in Him! Again and again, The Creator creates and re-creates us to become bit by bit to become more like Christ as we adventure with Him each day. May this piece remind of the joy of His life, His very breath in you today.
